AI is not eliminating cybersecurity jobs, but it is eliminating some cybersecurity tasks

Artificial intelligence is perhaps the biggest force reshaping cybersecurity careers in 2026.

There is understandable anxiety surrounding this development. If AI can analyze logs, summarize alerts, write detection rules, generate scripts, investigate indicators and produce reports, what happens to the analyst who used to perform those activities manually?

The answer is increasingly clear: the job changes.

The 2025 ISC2 study found that 69% of cybersecurity organizations were already using, testing or evaluating AI security tools. At the same time, cybersecurity professionals were surprisingly optimistic about AI. Seventy-three percent believed AI would create more specialized cybersecurity skills, while 72% believed it would increase demand for strategic cybersecurity capabilities.

This suggests that AI should be viewed less as a cybersecurity “job killer” and more as a job-composition changer.

The routine portions of jobs are becoming automated.

The judgment-intensive portions are becoming more important.

For example, a traditional SOC analyst might spend hours reviewing alerts. An AI-enabled SOC analyst may have an agent investigate thousands of events, correlate identities, systems and threat intelligence, and present a prioritized investigation.

The human analyst’s job becomes deciding whether the investigation makes sense, validating the evidence, determining business impact, directing the agent, escalating the incident and making the final decision.

The professional moves from doing every task to supervising systems that perform tasks.

That is a major career transformation.
